Over on the Face3 Book page of Friends of Callington Road Local Nature Reserve (Bristol) Fearne Leanora noted that someone had dumped two terrapin in the pond there. She rescued them and took them to an exotics vet so they are at least safe.

Running the Exotic Animals Register since 1977 one thing we got in the 1980s was LOTS of dumped terrapins that were bought as pets after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles craze. The other thing dumped were African snails and they can become BIG.
People buy the pets which are cheap to feed but get bored or, as suggested, find the tanks are too small so "bye-bye" terrapin!
Let's hope no more TMNT craze buying of terrapins this time around.
PLEASE do not buy as a fad. These animals are in your care for life not just a year or two.
